La Mamounia, Marrakech, Morocco
There is so much to say about this property! Ironically, although I had a 5 night stay, since I was at a conference I barely was able to experience it to its fullest potential. The property is in the old medina of Marrakech with a massive private garden. The garden is dated back to the 12th century and the Royal family. The hotel itself opened in 1923 with a blend of Arabic-Andalusian architecture and Art Deco style. Since then, it has hosted many famous people from Winston Churchill to Charlie Chaplin to Elton John.
The property has a secure drive up, as do all luxury properties in Morocco. Once stepping out of a vehicle, the doormen and others are very quick to handle all luggage. Check in is done by escorting into the main lobby where a welcome drink of almond milk and dates where served (and were amazing).
The property is grand, to say the least. The lobby is huge with gold carpets and a statue unlike any others. I asked about it and they know it is from right around 1900, but the artist and story has been lost over time.
My room was an incredible Executive Suite on the 4th floor in the corner. The room was about 800 SF, had a master bedroom and a lounge, a walk in closet, 2 balconies, a guest bathroom and the main bathroom with shower and soaking tub, dual vanities. The room was huge, stunning, and simply amazing. The detail of the walls, ceiling, doors – all of it was the most unique room I have ever stayed in and the more I looked, the more detail I saw. I did have a couple complaints or comments….the washroom was dark and a bit annoying when getting ready. The bed was hard, but I did sleep absolutely soundly and comfortably. Lastly, the internet did not work well on my computer for my whole stay.
Even with those issues, I still believe the room was fantastic and I would stay at it again in a heartbeat. The balcony was huge with two tables and chairs with a beautiful view over the city. It was very special to listen to the call to prayer from it. The shades and lights had control switches by the bed on each side. About every other day, I had a gift on my bed, such as a writing journal.
Except for breakfast, the only time I dined on property was once at the pool. The breakfast buffet was large with many options including an omelet station, multiple juices, cereals, cold meats and cheese, and much more. The sandwich I had at the pool was fine. It is to note the food at the property is quite expensive. A can of soda was $8. My soda, sandwich, and fries were $35 at the pool.
There is a very large outdoor pool and a smaller inside pool near the spa.
The property has a very large spa – over 27,000 square feet. I had a traditional hammam treatment and enjoyed it immensely.
Overall, I really enjoyed my time at the property. Although not perfect, the hotel is gorgeous with a tremendous sense of place.
