As part of my trip around the world, I visited The Savoy Hotel in London. The Savoy has been called “London’s most famous hotel” and has an incredible history. Originally opened in 1889, it was the first luxury hotel in Britain with electric lights, electric lifts, hot and cold running water, and many other features. Winston Churchill was a frequent lunch patron and even brought his cabinet with him to dine.
The property has a fantastic location – directly on the River Thames with underground stops very close. The property has amazing views of the city, including the London Eye. The Savoy is a Fairmont property as well.
The Savoy underwent a major renovation lasting a year and finished in Oct 2010. The 268 rooms and suites either have an English Edwardian theme (on the Thames side) or Art Deco (on the Strand side). No two rooms are the same with many boasting original features such as fireplaces and incredible views. The renovation featured luxurious materials including murano glass chandeliers, silk wall coverings, Italian linens and marble floors. Toiletries are Le Labo.
For my visit, I had the opportunity to see two suites and two deluxe rooms. Let’s start the photo tour with the Royal Suite – a stunning, 3500 sf, suite spread over the front of the entire 5th floor. From the many windows, 7 of London’s bridges are visible in addition to the London Eye, Big Ben, and other famous sites. The suite features marble throughout, a service kitchen, office, dining room with seating for 8, a large walk in closet, a king bed, soaking tub and steam shower, just to name a few. My pictures of this suite do not do it justice – it really is stunning beyond words!
The next suite I visited was one of the “personality suites”. In this case, I visited Marlene Dietrich. Other suites have other personalities as the featured theme, such as Marilyn Monroe, and honor the figures of those who have made The Savoy their home at one time. The suites are either Art Deco or Edwardian and feature special pieces, artwork or antiques associated with their namesake. The suites are 861 sf and also have river views.
I also saw two deluxe rooms – one Art Deco and one Edwardian. The rooms are 344 sf, feature either a king bed or two twin beds with city or courtyard views. They have Le Labo amenities with the well appointed marble bathrooms with large chrome fittings.
And now an Art Deco room.
I had my visit on the weekend and the property was quite busy. I was not able to see the spa or fitness center out of respect to the guests staying at the property. The property does have a kids program is quite family friendly.
The Savoy is a very iconic, historical property with a great location. I would highly recommend the property for guests appreciating both qualities.
As this is a Virtuoso property, I am proud to offer the following amenities: Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability; full English breakfast, for up to two in room guests; and $185 GBP Food & Beverage credit, to be utilized during stay).
