Grande Dame of the Far East
And that she is. The Peninsula is an iconic property for many reasons. The Hong Kong property is the flagship for the luxury chain, who has done a great job really keeping the product classy and outstanding. The hotel opened in 1928 and played a part in WWII. After the Japanese had captured the city of Hong Kong, officers used the hotel as their headquarters. In 1994, the hotel had a major expansion, adding a 30 story tower to match the existing facade. The new tower includes a heli pad which accommodates any guest wishing to have an 8 minute airport transfer.
The Peninsula Hong Kong finished a complete renovation in 2014. Most notable is the smart technology all the rooms feature. I doubt there exists a more tech savvy hotel in the world. Every room features tablets which control everything from the lights, to the television, to ordering ice or room service, flight information, or even city/weather information. The tablets have 11 languages programmed and contain menu’s for the spa and restaurant. The phone in the rooms are all equipped with VoIP, allowing for free calling world wide. As a mom who travels without her kids and relies on facetime, whatsapp, and skype to stay in touch, this is a fantastic feature! Other fun features in each room include a nail dryer, photo copy/fax machines and an iPod docking station. They really took their tech upgrade serious and it can be seen in the level of detail each room contains.
One last fun feature to point out before staring into the rooms photos is the valet box. By the door is a little cubby space cut out with its own door. This is a valet box so items can be delivered without disturbing the guests!
I was able to see two rooms. The first was the Grand Deluxe Kowloon. It is 460 square feet. I really loved the simple style in all the rooms.
The next room I toured was the Grand Deluxe Harbor View Suite, which is 1420 square feet. It isn’t very noticeable in my photos but one different between the original property and the new tower is the original property had very high ceilings.
I also saw the swimming pool, which is fully indoors with great views of the harbor.
The property is very well known as THE place to have high tea. This is good and bad for me. My afternoon tea was very lovely and I immensely enjoyed it. But, it was crazy busy!! So busy, when I first walked in I did not know where the front desk was located to meet my friend. The rest of the property was quite and peaceful, but the restaurant for tea was very, very busy.
The Peninsula Hong Kong is a fantastic property. They were early players in the luxury world and have done and excellent job staying current with today’s luxury travelers needs.
As this is a Virtuoso property, I am proud to offer the following amenities: Upgrade upon arrival, subject to availability; daily buffet breakfast, for up to two in room guests; $100 hotel credit; and early check in/late check out, depending on availability.
